Profound Transformation

Spiritual LessonsA milestone is a significant point or event in growth or development in a person's life. This applies to external events, such as getting your first job or getting married, and to spiritual lessons. These lessons are borne out of situations in terms of how you handle them or what is learned from them. Milestones can be subtle or powerfully expressed. They can come as a snowfall, quiet and gradual, or a rainstorm with its winds of change. Transitions can be so subtle, they're noticed only after completion--such as the falling away of certain behaviors. These milestones are inconspicuous, and yet definite indicators of a profound transformation. Spiritual lessons, or milestones in life, show you how far you've gotten along the karmic path. If you're familiar with astrology, you know that milestones are inevitable time wise. They often indicate karmic situations, and could come from any direction based on a persons natal chart. For instance, our late twenties to early thirties is known as the period covered by the first of three Saturn Returns, which means that Saturn returns to the same degree in your chart as it was when you were born. According to my astrologer friend Richard Lambrecht, it's a time when a person sets himself up concretely for his life (such as career direction, marriage or other responsibilities), or when weaknesses, mistakes, or costly choices (which have inherent lessons) are exposed. It can be a time of reckoning with your heaviest issues, becoming aware of your strengths and limitations, or making major decisions. Some people are relatively unaffected by these time periods, as it depends on natal placement or how far one has evolved. However, most of us deal with these issues at one point or another, as they serve to further us down the road of soul evolvement.

What's commonly termed the middle-age crisis occurs around age fifty-six. It's make it or break it time! This is when there are late marriages, career changes, or loved ones pass on around you. You look at what you have and haven't accomplished, and take stock of where you are in life. The last Saturn Return is around age eighty-four, the final resting place of Saturn. The first Return asks if you're on the right path. By the next one, spiritual realities set in and you get a sense of wisdom acquired through time, as Saturn is the "great teacher." By death you determine if you've mastered your karma and the spiritual lessons that were placed before you. How much karma have you worked out? Were you on your life purpose?

Milestones can revolve around age or be experiential, such as finding a career path, or how you express your life purpose in your career. Relationships, close friendships or community involvement can bring challenges, as when you need to stand up and speak your truth or call boundaries around yourself. Do you feel good about what you've done or how you handled the situation? We ferret out wisdom through hindsight of our life events. This new insight reveals patterns you can transform. Mastering change is a milestone in itself.
