With the dawning of a new year, it is natural to think about changes we wish to make; positive ways to improve our lives
Clients frequently ask what my recipe is for looking youthful at the age of 50, so here is my answer. “PEACE” is a little acronym I came up with which provides some suggestions for a tranquil and youthful existence.
Following are some of steps I strive to incorporate into my daily life, and I hope you may find them beneficial.
“P” is for “prayer.” Whether it be reflective meditation, contemplative prayer, supplications on behalf of others, or personal conversations with God – prayer is a powerful tool for alleviating stress and for converting negative energy into positive. Prayer is a vital part of my life, and it rarely fails to lighten or illuminate dark circumstances. Begin each morning by saying a little prayer of gratitude for the fresh day about to unfold, or ending each night by offering thanks for the blessings received. Daily prayers and/or meditations engender increased tranquility and release of tension.
“E” is for “exercise,” “eating healthful foods” and “eliminating toxins.” We need to exercise and eat properly in order to be healthy, so this ingredient should not be surprising. Movement serves to activate certain chakras or energy centers within us. There are innumerable activities which are enjoyable yet constitute exercise: Horseback riding; hiking; walking; swimming; bicycling; playing sports; golfing; dancing; yoga. Eliminating toxins such as tobacco, and excessive consumption of alcohol, caffeine, red meat and fatty foods will go a long way toward helping you maintain your vitality.
“A” is for “ample water.” Water is the ultimate purifier, both internally and externally. This is the liquid we should be drinking throughout each day – in copious amounts! Water serves to keep things flowing, rids our bodies of toxins, clears our skin and helps to ensure our organs are functioning properly. In addition, taking an occasional salt bath will serve to dissipate stress and negative energy. It is a wonderfully soothing remedy when times are particularly trying.
“C” is for “cease worrying.” Worrying is an activity which only serves to perpetuate stress. Worry does not solve problems, but rather tends to keep us focused on the difficult situation. Continually thinking about or speaking of unpleasantness or hurtful situations usually keeps us mired in the very situation we wish to be free of! Undue stress can cause depression or other emotional problems, which in turn result in physical ailments such as skin conditions, stomach illnesses, back pain, headaches and sleep disorders to name but a few. Should you find yourself caught up in excessive worry – shift the energy by saying a quick prayer, think of something which makes you smile; step outside to soak up some nature; listen to the birds sing; or take some form of productive action toward resolution of the dilemma.
“E” is for “enjoyment.” Laughter, smiling often and holding the best possible view of a situation goes a long way toward fostering a youthful existence. It is important to carve a little time into our hectic schedules to simply have fun. Blow some bubbles; watch a favorite movie; read; get into nature; spend time with pets; volunteer; play! It is wonderful for the spirit, and what is good for the spirit, is good for our entire being. So “peace” and wishes for a bright 2007!
