With the start of every new year comes the promise of renewal. We tend to go inward, reevaluate our life and adjust our course of action.
Those of us on the spiritual path renew our commitment to Soul, our spiritual discipline and practices. We align ourselves with Soul’s impulse for awakening. The ultimate goal is Soul’s development, or spiritual enlightenment. What exactly is enlightenment? I asked a friend and colleague, Joseph Ewasow, ACH. to expound on this topic, as he’s incorporated spirituality into his life for decades, and teaches others to do the same.
We both acknowledge the physical world as the culmination of a process at different levels, or dimensions. According to Joseph, “it’s a series of projections from the abstract and beyond, to this concrete material world. People’s behavior in general is also a process that starts from a much higher level and beyond, like the universe itself. This explains synchronicity. The cycles of life such as the changing seasons and the cycles of man can’t be separated, nor anything else in the universe, because of this process of creation. From the highest level of expression to this physical universe, all is one. There’s a redundancy of patterns in life that can be seen in all things. So where does mankind stand in all of this? If we were to see ourselves in the long succession of incarnations, and lifetimes in between incarnations, we would begin to understand the purpose of this process we call life. Knowing that reality begins way beyond expression, our conclusion is that the purpose of existence is for the benefit of Soul itself. In other words, for the awakening of that divine spark of God we call Soul.
“We call the awakening of this particle of God enlightenment. The process of enlightenment is ongoing in every conceivable and inconceivable manifestation. It’s for the ultimate goal of the awakening of God itself (the expressed aspect of God). Sometimes we forget this when we are drawn into the drama of life.
So how do we know when we are enlightened? Joseph’s response is, “There are levels of enlightenment that are distinct and separate experiences. From the common, mundane, human consciousness, into the levels of psychic and spiritual experiences, to cosmic consciousness, the levels will vary and express themselves uniquely for each of us. Yet there are similarities we all have in common. In cosmic consciousness there’s a definite embarkation from the lower mental states. Beyond cosmic consciousness––self realization––there’s a separate and unmistakable state of being unlike all else below it. It’s as different as being deeply asleep and fully awake.” The description of these states are so profound, that in respect to their importance, they’ll be addressed in a future article.
