 When we sleep, our spirits are free to roam to places where our physical bodies cannot go without assistance. Have you ever awoken in the middle of the night with the sense that you had been someplace other than your bedroom? Or perhaps you felt your body shaking, or had the sensation of landing on your bed with a thump? There is the very strong likelihood that you were experiencing an astral trip, and during those occasions your soul was taken on a magical journey. When we sleep, our spirits are free to roam to places where our physical bodies cannot go without assistance. Angels and spirit guides approach, and they accompany us on our mystical excursions. These journeys are stored in our memory banks for later use, and may provide one explanation for some of the deja vu sensations that we experience throughout our lifetime. We feel that we have been somewhere before, because we actually have. During astral travel, we are guided back through time to past events, as well as into future ones. At times our spirits will travel all over the universe, sometimes to visit friends or relatives in distant locations. You may recall dreams during which you were flying. You might have seen yourself hovering above earth or whisking through space. On some of these occasions, you may have stopped in to pay a visit to someone who lives far away. And you didn’t even have to pay for an airline ticket! In addition to the journeys our spirits take while our bodies repose, we also have the ability to travel astrally during the meditative state. Often when we meditate, angels will actually take us into the spiritual realm, where our spirits commune with those who reside in that realm. There are reasons for the sojourns which our souls engage in, although quite often our conscious self will not be made aware of the purpose at the time of the trip. Frequently there is spiritual or physical healing involved in the process. We will receive deeper enlightenment at a future moment in our life, or perhaps when it is our own time to cross over into the spiritual realm. It is important to understand that during those times when our spirits take flight, we are protected and cared for by our spirit guides and angels. We are not alone during these journeys, because our loving spiritual guardians are right there to guide us and to ensure us that our spirit safely rejoins the physical body. Do not be alarmed by the physical jolt which often occurs at the culmination of these trips. This is simply one aspect of the phenomenon which happens at the moment of reunification, when the astral body comes back into the physical body. If you feel that you might be experiencing frequent astral travels, it is wise to make sure that you are grounded and stable during your waking hours. There are a variety of ways to ground yourself, one of which is to simply step outside onto the grass or earth in your bare feet to truly connect with Mother Earth. Or you may take a few moments to visualize yourself with strong tree roots, extending from your feet deep into the earth. Another useful method is to carry small stones – such as hematite – in your pockets or upon your person, in order to help you stay grounded throughout the day. Before going to sleep or meditating, surround yourself with love, and white and golden light. Ask that all your journeys be safely guided, and that you will be blessed with protection along the way.
