“Now
there are besides these characters in our faces certain mystical
figures in our hands,” wrote Sir Thomas Browne in his Religio Medici.
Periodically, I look closely at my hands to take a measure of my
growth. I notice smaller lines occurring in greater abundance on both
palms. But there are many more lines on my left hand than on my right.
This is curious because the left, passive hand is the inherent nature,
the private self. The left hand shows temperment and inborn
characteristics. The right, dominant hand, is the report card of
worldly growth, the indicator of how one has played out those
tendencies of character shown by the lines in the left hand.
Could it be that from a complexity of thought and emotion in my
nature I am achieving simplicity of speech and action? That certainly
has been a personal goal of mine in recent years. Comparison of palmar
lines in the passive and dominant hands is a useful tool. Look
particularly at the Head line, midway between the Life and Love lines.
Are there little lines springing up off the Head line and possibly
joining the Heart line? This could illustrate intellectual growth that
eventually enlarges the ability to love or a relationship that begins
with the mind and proceeds to the heart.
“Look at the multitude of small lines crossing your palms, or rising or
falling from the main lines,” writes Henry Frith in his book Practical
Palmistry from 1917. “What caused them? You don’t know! You have done
no hard work which you think might have ‘brought them out!’” It’s true,
however, that lines can disappear, or modify their course, after first
appearing.
Another important line to consider in such a self-examination is the
line of Saturn, also called the “Career” line and formerly the line of
Fate, or Destiny. This line can run straight up the palm from its base,
from the Life line directly to the middle finger of Saturn. Or, the
line of Saturn can commence at any point in the palm. Saturn is growth,
transition and responsibility. It’s presence on the hand with a strong
finger, a well-developed mount below the finger and a well-etched line
indicates great growth, progress, in both personal and professional
areas.
If the line of Saturn splits off into two lines and one line heads
toward the ring finger of Apollo, an aptitude in art or making money
may be shown in addition to personal growth. If the line splits off
toward the index finger of Jupiter an aptitude for executive
administration and leadership is indicated.
Is there a line that crosses the side of the palm up to the little
finger of Mercury? That is the line of a great communicator, one who
will do well in conveying thoughts and ideas to others. Does this line
of Mercury start or stop at the Head line, or the Heart line? These
signs reflect the impact of the intellect and the emotions on the
ability or willingness to communicate.
The lines of Apollo, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury relate to each other.
Their greater or lesser presence on either hand is illustrative. Read
in combination on both hands, these lines provide a clear picture of
vocational aptitude and personal preference.
“Learn to know thyself and by this knowledge guide thy paths aright,”
writes Frith. “The Hand will guide the student on his way through the
wilderness of this world, and teach him wisdom as he goes.”
