Symptoms in Homeopathy
The theory of Homeopathy was founded more than 200 years ago, by Dr.
Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician. During his intensive
research and personal study, he concluded that when any
substance––plant, animal or mineral––is taken in excess, the body
responds with certain symptoms. When these substances are taken in a
highly diluted form, they can relieve the same symptoms they originally
induced at the higher dosage. The concept is “Like cures Like.”
A basic premise of Homeopathy is remedies work, because they
trigger the body’s own healing abilities. Unlike antibiotics and other
modern medicines designed to kill germs or inhibit their growth,
Homeopathic remedies are thought to alter the conditions that make the
body susceptible to infection.
Based on the premise that physical, mental and emotional stresses to an
individual’s constitution are what cause disease, the body’s
self-regulating mechanism––which Hahnemann called the
vital force––signals when those stresses are too great. This signalling
indicates, through the symptoms, how the body is coping and what it
needs to balance itself.
Re-establishing the balance between physical, emotional and mental
states, is the goal of a Homeopathic Physician. And understanding the
client’s symptoms is key to identifying the proper remedy. A Homeopath
pays attention to all facets of a client’s experience.
What Symptoms Mean In Homeopathy
• Symptoms are the result of an illness, not the illness itself.
Therefore, relieving a person’s symptoms is not the objective of
Homeopathic treatment.
• Symptoms are signposts leading to optimal health & should not be suppressed.
• Physical symptoms not only call attention to physical problems, but they also signal emotional or mental stress.

client? The Cernie Institute is offering both services. Dr. Sally
Cernie is the on-staff Homeopath. Instructor, Dr. Michele Iqbal,
graduated from the doctorate program in Homeopathy at Pakistan
University--where the original form of Homeopathy is taught. She has
certified two series of students in Riverside. This course is certified
by the Bureau of Postsecondary education. We are now taking names of
