When we drop the ego attachment to results and set our intention to the qualities of the will of Divine Spirit (or non- local mind) our choices are empowered, because it is the quantum consciousness that chooses.
I have just completed a class with Dr. Amit Goswami, a physicist with a wonderful mystical side. His love of science and his life experiences have taken him well beyond being stuck in the “physical only” view of life. The class was centered around what Dr. Goswami calls “quantum healing” and drew from his book “The Quantum Doctor: a physicist’s guide to health and healing.” It was marvelous!
As he talked about the science of quantum physics, I could hear the alignment of the writings by Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science, and the discoveries Dr. Goswami was explaining from the scientific experiments. In very simplified words, quantum physics theorizes that we live in a universe of infinite possibility, and that the observer makes a choice which collapses the possibilities into the one that has been chosen. Of course, the problem for most of us is that we don’t make conscious choices––nor do we make new choices very often. We tend to make the habitual choice we have learned and think it is all that is available.
Now there is nothing wrong with having habits that are healthy. William James pointed out that if we didn’t have the capacity to create habitual thought patterns, we would have to relearn everything, all the time. It would be a problem to just get out of bed, fix breakfast and get ready for the day! However, the problem with having habitual thinking is that it tends to put us to sleep, and then we walk around unconsciously making the same old choices hoping for a different outcome.
Another part of the complex idea of “choice” is the question of who gets to choose, when we participate in group activities. Dr. Goswami used the example of a traffic intersection with a traffic light. Two friends are approaching the light, one from the east and one from the south.
Who gets to choose which light is green? Well according to Dr. Goswami, if the two friends have no strong emotional energy on the situation, the inter-connectivity of the whole will make the choice. This “inter-connectivity” is what Carl Jung called the “collective unconscious,” what Emerson called the “Oversoul,” and what Ernest Holmes called our “race consciousness”––meaning the collective thought of the human race. At the traffic light, it means that without a conscious chooser, about half the time one of the two friends will get the green. However, the situation changes if one of the friends has a situation which brings him/her out of the sleep state of everyday life. I remember when I had a friend in my car who was having a heart attack and I was driving him to the hospital. Believe me, I was both emotionally involved and consciously aware and we made every green light for the three mile drive (in heavy Los Angeles traffic) from my work to the hospital. According to Dr. Goswami (and Ernest Holmes agrees) the combination of awareness and emotion created the opportunity to choose that overrode the 50% chance of the collective thought.
Another aspect of this particular situation, was that I was actively praying to align myself with the Divine Right Action of Spirit that I believe is taking place all of the time. This called in a third part of the equation. I was not praying for a specific result (looking for green lights) I was praying to be the Right Action of Spirit. This is a variation on the ancient prayer “Not my will, but Thy will be done.” When we drop the ego attachment to results and set our intention to the qualities of the will of Divine Spirit (or non-local mind) our choices are empowered, because it is the quantum consciousness that chooses.
When we move our prayers to the heart space that can lovingly say (and mean it) “May all be well and whole,” we transform not only our individual experience, but the entire world.
