Most of the palm readings
I’ve received, professionally
and otherwise, seem to
have been based on intuition.

The reader would only seem to use my hands as a springboard to make observations about my character. This practice has confirmed my belief that most palm readers are operating as much from intuition, and a shrewd reading of the face and body language, as the shapes and lines on the palm.

There is something very intimate and open about the act of opening one’s palms to somebody else. It is an act of trust, as well as a query. To honor this trust, I attempt to follow the guidelines of William G. Benham as he set them forth in his book The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading. With this work, Benham attempted to put the practice of Cheirognomy on an objective basis. As a result, he is somewhat disinclined to discuss intuition and one of the basic types of individuals within palmistry generally characterized as the Psychic type.

The Psychic hand is long and thin with the fingers longer than the palm itself. Those with the Psychic hand are sensitive and highly susceptible to impressions and imaginative pictures that arrive unsummoned from other people. Benham characterizes this type as “imaginative,” rather than intuitive; but the great palmist Cheiro had real concerns about the aspects of character reflected by the Psychic hand. “Its very fineness and beauty indicate its want of strength and energy,” Cheiro wrote, “it is not fitted for the roughness of the battle of life.” Not surprisingly, many palm readers have the Psychic hand. Other qualities of character are mixed into the Psychic hand but the overall temperament, of course, is highly imaginative and sensitive.
I recently had a very interesting encounter with a lady gifted in palmistry. When I broached the subject, she told me she also read from the face. This is called the study of physiognomy. When I proffered my hands to her, she barely looked at them and proceeding to tell me things about myself that only a gifted sensitive could see. She frequently blinked her eyes when doing this and seemed to be looking at a book beside me in space on my right side. Her comments were most astute and pertained to paradigms of my temperament that were absolutely personal and emphatically true.

When it was my turn to read her hands, I was not at all surprised to find that she had the Psychic hand, lovely and well developed. With the long sensitive shape of the Psychic hand I often see the thumb set very close to the palm itself, a sign of a very private nature. It makes sense that those who can see much will develop discrimination about sharing what they see. When one sees much that is true, or hidden, about others, one must use great tact in sharing that information. There is protectiveness and a certain guardedness shown by a thumb set close to the palm itself. Picture it. In the well of the thumb we carry our secrets. This knowledge is abundant with those who are intuitive. In this case, the use of discretion becomes a very necessary tool of survival in the battle of life.

The lady with the Psychic hand was having difficulty with her right hand, a form of carpal tunnel syndrome, and it was laced up in a protective medical stirrup. Her husband had recently recovered from lymphoma and much of the rearing of their only child, a boy, had fallen on her during the time of treatment and several rounds of chemotherapy. Her thumb had a very strong first phalange, slightly larger than the “waisted” and narrow second phalange, which illustrated great strength of will. A possible issue with control was further shown by the ring finger of Apollo having greater length than the index finger of Jupiter. She admitted that control was an issue for her and it had been exacerbated with her husband’s recent difficulties. He was now fully recovered and a highly effective breadwinner. She wanted to give up her business and remain at home with her husband and son, but was finding it difficult to do so. A matter of trust was involved, a giving up of certain control and a venture down a path that, for her, was new.

Though highly Psychic, this lady was just as susceptible to the slings and arrows of life’s battles as anyone else. And she confessed that her intuitive abilities would absolutely not work with anyone that she knew well. She observed that the difficulties with her right hand may have been connected to her issues with control and the many challenges she had recently faced. Through her reading it became apparent for her that a time of surrender and trust in life’s new possibilities was necessary. She could relinquish control.
