The lines in the palms of the hands may be compared to rivers. Like water, the palmar lines carry energy, and are constantly evolving and changing. These lines reflect both the energy and its nature in the life of the individual.
And, as with rivers, we speak of these lines as “running” or “flowing” across the hand. If the lines are well-cut and deep, great force of temperament is shown. If deeply etched in the hands, these lines show a sure grasp on life and great vitality, a passion and certainty of being. Tenuous lines, while still indicative of character, may reflect a more querulous and tentative nature.
The three major lines in the hands, the Life line, running between the index finger of Jupiter and the thumb down to the base of the palm, the Head line, running directly across the middle of the palm and the Heart line, directly beneath the fingers are the great rivers on the continent of human nature.
The arrangement of the major lines on the hand reflects the three worlds of the personality. They are vertically arrayed, as with the chakras, linking the material, mental and spiritual worlds. At the base is the physical world, the Life line, and above that is the mental world of the Head line. Surmounting both is the ideal and spiritual world of the Heart line. You might say that these significant rivers of personal energy reside within the “valley” of the hands, deep within the well of being.
Surrounding this valley of the self are mounts, or mountains, of being, taking their nature and signification from the planets. The mountains of Jupiter, Saturn, Apollo and Mercury rest beneath the fingers carrying these same attributes. On either side of the palm are the mountains of Mars, separated by the great plain of battle in the valley of being. And at the base of the palm is the mountain of Venus, directly beneath the thumb, and the mount of Luna, below the little finger of Mercury.
The major lines will frequently run up to or adjoin these mountains. When that is the case, an aspect of temperament is shown. When the Heart line curves up to the middle finger of Saturn, for example, the possibility and necessity for great growth and change in matters of love is emphasized. If the Heart line begins beneath Jupiter, control may be an issue or, paradoxically, boldness in the affections.
Does the Head line run directly between the Mountains of Mars across the hand? This individual may be a lifelong learner who is capable of making a real intellectual argument. If the Head line curves down towards the Mount of Luna, an inclination to the intuitive is shown. And, if that is the case, is the Head line more or less deeply etched as it curves to Luna? Here is a possible indication of the depth of the inclination towards the intuitive.
Are many little lines arrayed across the Mountain of Venus? Warmth of temperament and great humanity are illustrated if this is the case. Without these lines on Venus, a more withdrawn temperament may be shown. According to palmist and author Fred Gettings, the upper part of the Mount of Venus represents “the sublimated force of the mount” and the lower region near the ball of the thumb “the sensual and creative powers within the psyche.”
Gettings found that many artists had arrays of lines running across the lower half of Venus. When these lines span lower Venus from the Life line directly across to the second phalange of the thumb, the free flowing of energies from the inner life into external reality is plainly shown. An absence of lines on lower Venus may also indicate little sympathy for matters of art and literature.
As with a map of an unknown continent, the wandering rivers of energy flowing through the plains and mountains in the palm reflect the evolution of a soul. Call it a geological progression of the self, epochs of change contained within the span of a single life.
