Soul retrieval is a major aspect of shamanic work. My own breakthrough came one day when I had reached the end of my rope. I was furious with my current healer who was not fulfilling my expectations. She refused to love and appreciate me. She was just as inadequate as my mother had been in meeting my needs. I had tried everything I knew to solicit the respect and esteem I needed from her to no avail. The rage I was feeling was replacing the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. Somewhere inside myself the words bubbled up, “never again”. It repeated over and over again until I began to feel a new core of strength forming in my gut. I determined that day to never expect anyone to love me enough to fill that place of neediness. I would love that part of myself so that it would never again feel abandoned and alone. I separated from this childlike part and promised it I would never forget her. I would continue to nurture and support her in the days, weeks and months that followed. This was the beginning of a healing journey that I would eventually share with my clients and students. It changed my life and the lives of my clients.
The Shaman is one who realizes life is a series of perceptual states of awareness. That by shifting this awareness you can change your experiences. Through the act of envisioning the possibilities rather than the probabilities, you engage the energy of the universe to create the life you want.
The Shaman engages all aspects of life as potential teachers. The plants, animals, mother earth, father sky, the sun, moon, and stars. All of creation has something to teach us. The Shaman calls upon the spirits of the water, the fire, the air, and the earth and engages them directly through ceremony, song, and prayer.
