I wonder how many of you are familiar with the expression “A little bird told me”. It is something I have not heard for a long time but this was once a common expression. It means of course that the person had some very interesting information but did not wish to reveal the source. You may be surprised to learn that this expression actually dates back thousands of years. It was believed in ancient times that birds could fly between this world and the next and represented the angels. Many birds both real and mythical inspire such belief, so many people relate angelic experiences symbolised by a bird.

Owls for instance, have always represented wisdom but also the belief that a departed soul sent them to comfort the bereaved.  You will no doubt be familiar with the singer and ex member of the Beatles Paul McCartney. He tells the story that when his first wife, Linda died of cancer, he was feeling bereft and very lonely. As he gazed out of the window one day whilst feeling particularly low, a large white Owl landed on a tree branch close to the window. He felt at once, this was a message from Linda. He was convinced that a spiritual message had been sent in the form of a bird. This happened several times and always when he needed a message most.

There is a long- standing belief that a Blackbird flying into the house indicates a death is about to take place. I recall some years ago a friend of mine telling me this true story. He woke early one morning to find a blackbird sitting perfectly still and unblinking in the centre of his bedroom carpet. He was astonished, not least because the window and door to his bedroom had been firmly closed all night. The room did not contain a fireplace or a chimney so where on earth had the bird come from! He opened the window wide and went downstairs for breakfast, hoping the bird would simply fly out of the window. Sometime later, on returning to his bedroom, he was amazed to find the bird still sitting perfectly still in the same place. At this point the telephone rang and he discovered that it was in fact the mother of his closest friend. She related the terrible news that his friend and all his family had been killed in a dreadful accident whilst on holiday. Stunned he went back into his bedroom only to find the bird had gone. He immediately drove to visit the mother of his friend to try and comfort her. On arrival he was told that a blackbird had been sitting perfectly still all morning in the middle of the kitchen floor!

However, the bird that generates the most stories of spiritual experiences, is the common and much loved garden Robin. I have many stories in my books about Robins and the very obvious message at times of stress. You would think hat because this is such a common bird people would be very sceptical about their involvement but I have found it is all in the timing of the bird appearing and often the unusual place. There was true for one young lady who had recently lost her mother and was grieving dreadfully. After taking time from work to arrange and attend her mother’s funeral the day arrived when she knew she must return to work and her everyday routine. Each morning she would take the very packed, little commuter train into the city. The platform of the station was always filled with people and this particular morning the young lady was dreading the journey. She walked to the station, her mother uppermost in her thought and found herself saying aloud "Mum I hope you are now happy in heaven"” Arriving at the railway station she was astonished to find that the usually crowded platform was completely empty! She sat down on a bench bemused as to where the other passengers were on that bright spring morning. Sitting alone she was suddenly aware of a slight movement and turning saw a beautiful little Robin land on he bench right next to her! She knew instantly that this was the chosen method of the angels communicating to her and delivering the message that her mother was indeed happy in heaven. Some moments later the train arrived and that too was completely empty, this had never happened before or indeed since and the young lady concluded that her lovely little robin had needed the silence to deliver his message.

Many of us will be aware of the significance of white feathers, so much so they are often called “the angel’s calling card” perhaps we do not however, seen an actual bird as a messenger. .It is a matter of trusting signs, if we feel it might be a message then it probably is! The interesting fact is that if we feel we recognise a sign and trust it, then it appears more frequently. Angels will try to find a way of contacting and communicating to us in ways we will find most comforting. We receive what we can cope with and often this is a sign in nature. I trust that one day you may be able to tell your friends that you have experienced a gentle angel message and when they ask how do you know, you can reply “A little bird told me”
