Your Body’s Wisdom

Written by  Gloria Flores, CST-D

You may be surprised to learn that your body has its own wisdom, which is separate and distinct from the wisdom of your mind.  The mind thinks, while the body feels. The body can give us feedback that’s different from the mind. We can learn to tap into and be informed by this wisdom, and use it to transform our lives and improve our health. Although the body is often dismissed as something less than the mind or soul, our body is a special, unique and valuable part of who we are.

We can learn things from our bodies beyond what our minds can access. Antonio Damasio is an internationally recognized leader in neuroscience, and director of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute. He has done extensive research on the body’s ability to feel and process information. Mr. Damasio  discovered that “The mind is embodied, not just embrained.”  One of Damasio’s discoveries is how the feelings of the body influence rational thought without us even being aware of the process.

His research noted that people who are unable to detect changes in their own bodies, like an increased heart rate or sweaty palms, are also unable to make effective decisions. When given a simple gambling task, these people behaved erratically and lost vast sums of money. Because when people can’t detect the physical symptoms of fear, they never learn from their mistakes. Damasio showed that we need to feel in order to think.

Compare these findings to your own personal experiences. How many times in the past have each of us had strong feelings to either do or not do something that later proved to be accurate? For most of us the answer will be many times. Intuitively we have always known that trusting our feelings usually leads us in the right direction, even if we don’t always act upon those feelings. The signals coming to us directly from our bodies are messages from our environment. Our body picks up this information and translates it to us as feelings. Learning the language of the body is simply a matter of being sensitive and in-tune with our feelings.

Your body wisdom includes the innate wisdom for self-healing. Healing is something that happens naturally.  Our bodies are comprised of approximately 100 trillion cells, within each of the trillions of cells there are 30 million biochemical reactions going on moment to moment, none of which requires any conscious thought on your part. Your bone marrow makes 2.5 million red blood cells per second. You cure cancer every day of your life. Because of the staggering amount of DNA directed activity that goes on in your body each day, there is a system for detecting and eliminating any cells whose DNA division has gone wrong.  Your body   easily heals a cut or scratch on your skin, all of this being done through a symphony of cellular intelligence or body wisdom.

Disease occurs when we disturb this natural intelligence by the way we live and the choices we make. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and chronic stress can cause general patterns of interference. Disease is the message sent by our body’s wisdom to slow down, reconsider, and make changes. Healing occurs when we listen to and restore our internal wisdom. In addition to changes in lifestyle, healing depends on changes in the mind-style. Dysfunctional beliefs, emotional blockages, stifled creativity and troubled relationships are of few of the issues that contribute to disease over time. You can rely on the creative intelligence of your body’s wisdom to keep you healthy and to restore your health when you experience disease. Regardless of your personal health issues, it is important to regain confidence in the healing power that lives naturally within you.

Today, many believe that it is the doctor’s responsibility to keep us healthy. We think we need to hover near the medical system to get tested, immunized and monitored for disease. We are dependent on a disease focused medical system offering us drugs for every ailment. No wonder chronic illness is everywhere and many feel overwhelmed. Our high-tech medical world often obscures the fact that all healing is self-healing.  Doctors can only assist the body’s innate wisdom and healing ability.
