I realized I had been privileged to know a very holy man

For nearly twenty years I have patronized a small video store on a country road near my home. Over the years I got to know the proprietor, an amiable otherwise-retired chap named Don. Don and I regularly schmoozed over the counter about movies, our families, our dogs, and philosophies of life. Don's beloved pooch had gone over the rainbow bridge a few years earlier, and when I introduced him to my dog Munchie, Don lit up like a five-year-old boy at Christmas.

There must be more to life than increasing its speed.

Business mogul Warren Buffet, the second richest man in the world, recently donated $31 billion to charity. In a CNBC interview, Mr. Buffet talked about his life and revealed his secrets for success. Here are some of the shocking facts:

He still lives in the same, small 3-bedroom house in Midtown Omaha he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

Maybe it's time to listen less to the news and more to your heart.

If you read the small print on contracts, no one is liable for "Acts of God." Acts of God are disasters beyond human control, like storms, floods, and (some would argue) protracted visits from uninvited relatives. I find it fascinating that in such contracts God takes the rap for what goes wrong, rarely receiving credit for what goes right.

As I see it, God has done a lot of pretty cool stuff far more significant than knocking trees over. God put all the trees here in the first place, bringing us their oxygen, shade, fruit, wood, and verdant splendor.

...understand, that the source of love is real, and the source of fear is illusion.

While traveling in the South Pacific, I had the rare opportunity to see the Magic Circus of Samoa. The final act of the evening was a guillotine-toting magician. He chose a reluctant "volunteer" from the audience and ceremoniously demonstrated the sharpness of the blade by swiftly chopping a cucumber. Then he locked the volunteer in the guillotine and milked the tension with a long stream of jokes, asking the fellow if he had any last words.

Live as if you already know.

As I was walking to breakfast at a retreat center, a woman sitting beside the path asked me, "Do you know what time it is?" Not having a watch, I guessed, "I think it's about 9:15."

"I don't think so," she said quickly. "It was 9:15 about half an hour ago."

"Then why did you ask me?" I asked her.

"I guess I was looking for confirmation," she replied.

It's not who you know that counts;it's who you are.

A voice message from my friend Kinnie, who works as a massage therapist at a luxury hotel said: "Call me--I have to tell you about my brush with greatness."

I phoned Kinnie and she said, "I massaged Dustin Hoffman today."

Well, that was cool. Yet something bothered me about her phraseology, "My brush with greatness."
