Palmistry: Lines of Union

Written by  Ray Zone

Some of the most frequent queries posed to a palm reader pertain to marriage.

The marriage lines, for this most chiromantic of questions, are arrayed variously on the hand.  Generally, the ring finger of Apollo and little finger of Mercury relate most directly to our relationships with other people and the Heart Line itself, uppermost on the palm, illustrates our ability to love.

Marriage may be shown when the Heart Line ends in a fork below the middle finger of Saturn.  If the two forked lines are long, a relationship of great duration may be shown. Historically, of course, it is the finger of Apollo that carries the wedding ring. There used to be a very ancient belief that the ring finger was connected directly to the heart by a subtle nerve or artery.

It is the lines themselves, however, that give the most direct indications of our intimate relationships and a reader may examine them as a kind of “report card” of current or past events for the individual without making any claim to reading the future. Traditionally the marriage line itself is directly below the little finger of Mercury on the side of the hand between the first phalange of the finger and the Heart line.  The marriage line will frequently curve up around the side of the hand onto the Mount of Mercury.

If the line falling in this area is well defined it indicates marriage. There may, of course, be more than one line. When the line is not well defined it may be an indication of a more temporary alliance. The marriage line will fall directly below Mercury because that is the finger of communication. The length of the line indicates the duration of the relationship. Little vertical lines rising above these marriage lines, when well cut, indicate children resulting from the union. When the marriage line falls closer to the Heart line the union happens earlier in life. If it occurs higher up and closer to the first phalange of the finger, the marriage takes place later in life.

Another highly developed indication of marriage is a Line of Influence that joins to the Life Line curving around off the Mount of Venus at the base of the thumb. Another sign of marriage is a Line of Influence curving up from the the Mount of Luna, opposite the Mount of Venus, and joining directly to the Saturn line which runs straight up the palm to the middle finger of Saturn.  Two crossed lines on the Mount of Jupiter, directly below the index finger, may also be seen as an indicator of happy marriage or gratified ambition.

I confess to writing about the subject of the marriage lines with difficulty. This subject is easily seen as falling within the divinatory precincts of “fortune telling.” Chiromancy itself, the reading of lines, has long suffered scientific disfavor and the subject of love, much less that of fated lovers and the concept of “love at first sight,” complicates an effort to present this aspect of palmistry in a scientific manner.

Nevertheless, everybody wants to know about this subject.  And many are the eager gazes that have been privately directed by different individuals into their own palms for elucidations of the expectant heart eager for love.
