Last month we explored how energy expands with love and contracts with fear. Belief systems and karmic patterns influence how we interpret life, which is then reflected in how we approach life in general. Do we have an open heart or is it closed down with fear and mistrust? Can we have an open heart all the time? Spiritual masters come from love; they have mastered lessons and karma associated with fear and negativity. I do believe we are on this planet not only to do our purpose, but also to master our karma. That is Soul’s directive; it’s own personal mission. That involves exploring the gamut of human consciousness, of which love and fear are basic emotions and encompass many entwining lessons.

How do we know when we are coming from fear rather than love? Some signs are pretty obvious; we are all intuitive enough to feel our energy constricting. Tightness, pressure in the chest, clenched teeth, confusion, obsession, magnetizing negative energy are just some examples of fear and stress. Stress, of course is a by product of fear. Our energy spirals downward, and the fear itself grows like a monster and takes over our life. We close down to possible solutions because we only see what we lack or whatever our fear is focusing on. Coming from a place of fear brings on more fear.

We are not tempted to take risks because fear breeds self-doubt and lack of confidence. Focusing on what we lack rather that giving gratitude for all we have, and especially not realizing that we have all we need at any given moment are signs we are coming from fear rather than love. The key here is to change our thought patterns to turn things to love. There are many techniques and books that have been written on this subject. But before I work with clients on these issues, I remind them that removing the fear energy first is paramount to clearing a path to change. It’s not enough to work with the mind; the energy has to be discharged.

Working with our breath is a quick and effective way to release negative energy of any type. It also helps to keep the aura closed, which in turn keeps out negative energy from entering the energy field and body. This is very important. If we just concentrate on our breath for a few moments we will feel more centered. It’s calming and helps to reorient us so we can more clearly focus on the task at hand. Combine intention with your breath. Name what you are breathing out; in this case fear energy. Fear of what in particular? Perhaps you are obsessing on a situation, an event that has not passed yet or a sense of lacking something. It doesn’t matter what it is, just focus and with intention to release, breathe it out. Breathe out gently and let sighs come up. This is not a race. Your body will tell you when to take the next breath. Sighs and yawns are good; they signal the release and shifting of energy. Intending to clear the chakras affected by this fear is a good idea as well, which can be done concurrently with releasing the energy.

Continuing to breathe with intention will eventually bring a sense of neutrality, or emptiness. There will be an absence of fear or stress. Will this be a permanent change? Not necessarily, since the thought patterns and karma and the pictures of these patterns in our second and third chakras have not been addressed yet. It’s a beginning, and goes a long way in neutralizing the emotional paralysis that may accompany certain types of fear. Then we can work towards changing thought patterns to turn things to love and live in the moment. This is mastery in the making, and this empowering breath technique can be done anywhere, anytime! It’s a simple, wonderful start to changing our lives for the better.
