In addition to conventional intervention, many medical professionals, like Drs. Martin Rossman, Herbert Benson, Carl Simonton and Dean Ornish, recognize and acknowledge the power of the human mind and its impact on healing and recovery. So, perhaps the real question is: What is it about survivors like Armstrong and so many others that give them the will and determination to recover and live, while others slip into the abyss and succumb? When it comes to facing catastrophic illness, in addition to the expertise of ones healthcare practitioners, a program focused on Positive Attitude, Meditation, Guided Visualization and Fearlessness will produce significant results. By utilizing the skills and techniques associated with these four areas, one will be able to cease having negative thoughts entirely, stay grounded during difficult times, learn how to control or eliminate pain, stimulate the growth of healthy cells in their body, reduce recovery time and a great deal more. People with positive attitudes take the initiative to make things happen and focus, not on the problems themselves, but on the solutions. Studies cite that optimists are healthier, persistent, more successful in school, on the job, on the playing field and in relationships, and they are depressed less often and for shorter periods of time. Meditation has been practiced worldwide and is spiritually and physically restorative. It may serve as a special preparation preceding chemotherapy or surgery. Where you begin to acquire the information necessary to embark upon your own program of meditation is immaterial. Just begin. Take the first step and the rest of your journey will take care of itself. Akin to meditation is guided visualization, creative self-imagery scripted, produced and directed in your Mind's Eye, and then archived in your subconscious for review, editing and replay at a moments notice. Although you will be extremely relaxed during a guided visualization, you will be fully conscious and in total control at all times. A facilitator weaves a story taking you on a journey to a special placeone we refer to as your "inner sanctum"that special place in your Mind's Eye, deep within your subconscious, where you have total freedom to tap into the rich rewards of unlimited potentiality. It is in that space where you can directly affect your illness: for example, the cessation of cancerous cell production for the cancer patient; the restoration of proper circulation and oxygenated blood flow for the patient with heart disease; or the elimination of tremors for the Parkinson's patient. Concerning fearlessnessfear is a normal emotion. It emanates from the unknown or a previous experience, and can be immobilizing, keeping us entrenched in resistance. Fear is the great oppressor. It is the source of stress. It accentuates pain, causes blood vessels to constrict, impedes recovery and produces acute anxiety. Ones worst fears often yield to hopelessness, despair and depression. Surrendering to your fears takes diligence. One way is by using a "mantra," which is a "power-phrase" you say to yourself repeatedly, over and over, during meditation or prayer. One of two mantras you may want to use are, "If I act as if I am unafraid, I gradually cease to be afraid," and the second, "Successful people are afraid all the time...then they do it anyhow!" To anchor each of these four concepts, we have found that professional coaching, because it is neither therapy nor consulting, is an ideal modality. Therapy deals with unresolved past issues. Consulting is giving guidance and advice. Coaching, on the other hand, creates safe, sacred, confidential, nonjudgmental space for each individual to create a more satisfying experience. The power of the mind healing is about courageously using your head, your imagination, and your heart to tap into your inner healer while being an active co-creator in your healing process with your healing team.
