Small ovals or islands on the lines and mounts of the hands generally are regarded as a defect. “This sign is one which has been misunderstood and improperly handled by many palmists,” writes William Benham in his book, The Laws of Scientific Hand-Reading. The island itself is not a single sign but is created by the splitting of the main, or major, line and a return of the split back to the major line.

Many palmists regard the island as a defect, a disturber, and consider that it must never be disregarded. If the lines of the hand reflect flowing currents of energy, any isolated surface of skin surrounded by a divided line shows a break in that energy. An island appearing on a line is similar to an obstructing island that divides a stream which must flow around the impediment and unite once it has flowed around it.

The size and length of the island shows the extent of the obstruction of energy and its duration. The position of the island on a line corresponds to the age of the individual as shown by that point on the line. Islands on the lines are similar to breaks, squares and forks, and similar disruptions of energy, but they generally represent a temporary impediment to the flow of energy.

An island on the heart line under the ring finger of Apollo, may indicate illness. Under most conditions an island on the heart line indicates a disappointment to the affections, anxiety, loss or emotional distress. An island on a line between the heart and life lines may illustrate a friendship that has caused pain.

Islands on the head line may indicate a period of diminished intellectual ability and difficulty in concentration. When present on the life line, an island may show a duration of decreased physical vitality and a search of the entire hand for health defects may be in order.

An island on the Saturn, or career, line may indicate a loss of reputation injurious to one’s work. If an island appears on the line of Apollo, one should be very careful of one’s name and reputation.

Islands will usually appear on the lines of the hand, whether major or minor, and indicate that energy will be divided for a period of time.

Occasionally, an island will appear on a mount of the hand. When appearing on the mount of Saturn, care must be taken to rest from activities for a period of time. When appearing on the mount of Mercury, beneath the little finger, one must be careful to use their energies to be trustworthy and honest.

An island appearing on the mount of Luna, at the base of the palm below the little finger, may denote prophetic dreams and psychic insights. Appearing on the mount of Mars, between the thumb and first finger, midway up on the side of the palm, an island may reflect a period of less happy times, especially in childhood. If an island is shown on the mount of Venus, directly below the thumb, a devotion to the opposite sex is shown which could lead to several lovers.

In general, islands on the heart line indicate emotional challenges. Islands on the life line indicate physical illness. On all other lines, islands may indicate confusion and a refusal to progress or change. Transverse islands may be adverse influences.

If an island is found on the life line of the left (passive, nondominant) hand the cause of physical illness may be hereditary. Outward circumstances may be responsible if the island is found on the life line of the right (dominant) hand.

“The island can never be considered a fortunate sign,” wrote Cheiro, that singular poet of palmistry. “Its role is to break down or weaken the qualities of whatever line or mount of the palm on which it appears.”
