If you knew Who walks
beside you on the way
that you have chosen,
fear would be impossible.
––Text, page 378

Last weekend I invited my two oldest granddaughters to stay over night. It’s always a treat for them to have a sleepover at Bunya and Grampa’s house! When they are here for the bedtime hour, we love to snuggle and read or tell stories to each other. The youngest of the two, is 7 years old. She requires special cuddling. (…or maybe I’m savoring the closeness of the cuddling years). There’s something very satisfying about staying with this little one, until she drifts to sleep. It’s like keeping the watch, sheltering her from the uncertainty of shadows and nighttime. I feel protective, as if my presence alone can stand guard over her fantasies, wooing slumber, swaying her to safe and sweet dreams.

Perhaps I remember feeling afraid of the dark in my own childhood. Do you remember being afraid of the dark? Sometimes darkness still frightens me, but it’s not an uncommon fear. A Course in Miracles says that fear itself seems to live in darkness. We relate to this in Spiritual terms when we speak of the Light, or being illuminated, in contrast to darkness. When the Light comes we see things differently. When we expose our problems to Light, they don’t seem to be so scary or overwhelming. In the Light, we remember Who walks with us.

I feel a pause in my breath when I read the Course quotation, “If you knew Who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear would be impossible.” What a peaceful and serene thought, that we are never alone. But my favorite part of that passage is this: it is the way that we have chosen. Each day we make a multitude of choices. Each day, we choose again the way that we journey through life. And at any time we recall Who walks with us, we are strengthened – aligned to a magnificent and commanding truth. We have snuggled up to Life.

Ernest Holmes stated it perfectly when he said, “No man or woman need go unguided through life, for all are divine at the center and all are images of the Most High!” (SOM p367) We are guided, directed, sometimes carried through this life by Spirit within. By daily recognizing this fact, practicing the Presence and holding a witness consciousness for seeing God everywhere, we bring Light to the dark places of life. “We have thought that outside things controlled us,” Holmes said, “when all the time we have had that within which could have changed everything and given us freedom”. (p295) Step away from the shadowland and see with real vision, inner vision illumined by Infinite Wisdom. See that there is nothing controlling you, no monsters in the dark, only fantasy run wild, and you will know that you are free and you are safe.

The Course reads: “Fear seems to live in darkness, and when you are afraid you have stepped back. Let us then join quickly in an instant of light, and it will be enough to remind you that your goal is light.” A mere instant of remembering awakens that Light within us. It shifts our perception to see, to be, and to receive all the Glory that God would have us be.

Much like snuggling beside my sleepy granddaughter, we too remember this truth for others and for ourselves, each time we bring it to Light in our own mind. Let us all take that High Watch by knowing the Truth of Who it is that walks with us!
Feel that Presence of Light dear ones!
