Why are we attracted to one person and repelled by another? Why are some relationships dramatic while others are calm? Why do we enter into certain relationships anyway? By now, most of us are aware of the concept of karma and life lessons. If we are aware enough, we realize (sometimes in hindsight) that relationships provide fertile ground for mastery and burning off specific karma. The karma itself is specific as it relates to the particular Soul (person) with whom we are interacting. We do not encounter the same lessons with everybody; different issues are associated with different souls.

What did you learn (or are learning) from your mother, best friend, partner or co-worker? Does each relationship share the same dynamics? Of course not. With each person we meet, we have specific Soul Contracts and Karmic Agreements. Our experiences are not the same with everyone, although we may see a common thread through all of them. That is an indication of a major lesson or issue that can be mastered or healed in this lifetime. Our relationships give us the opportunity to resolve these issues and patterns, and the karma we have with each individual.

Ever enter into a relationship knowing it would make you crazy, even after having the “Oh no, not again!” sign flash in your head? It’s as though we are compelled to do so; it’s out of our control. We try to resist, but lack the power to walk away. One explanation for this is that Soul is guiding us to resolve whatever issues the other person energizes. That particular individual is one of the conduits by which we can grow, and hopefully, finish whatever we have to finish in this lifetime. Naturally, it works both ways. They are also working something out with us.

Here is where Soul Contracts enter the picture. In-between lifetimes, each Soul makes contracts with other Souls (usually the same ones repeatedly) to come together for a particular purpose. Perhaps there is a debt owed, a lesson to be learned, or forgiveness to be received and/or given. Sometimes they are our teachers or students. Regardless, there’s always a reason for meeting. The relationship will probably continue until all (there are usually multiple) contracts are fulfilled. If the association ends before the lesson is learned, then the lesson itself continues with another Soul. If the specific karma with the individual is not burned off, it continues into another lifetime with the same Soul. These are karmic patterns that can be resolved through love, detachment with compassion, and forgiveness. Gratitude is another approach that allows the healing process a fuller expression. Although forgiveness opens the heart and allows for a greater flow of love, it’s gratitude that brings the individual a higher form of love, such as unconditional and divine love. Deeper insight into the relationship is also possible with gratitude and compassion. This is very general, but if there is any negativity between two Souls, you can bet they will meet again in another effort to resolve the conflict.

Certain Soul Contracts can be nullified in some instances. For example, one of my clients had many contracts with her boyfriend. They had been together for over a year, and it was determined during the course of a session that most of the contracts had been satisfied. Why was she still hanging on, trying to help him? It seemed, because of his addictions, he was incapable of change at this time. The situation was a drain on her and she attracted a lot of negative energy through her link with him. My client did not want to give up on her boyfriend; it was as if she would be betraying a sacred duty to save him from himself. In order to discover the root of this behavior, I went to the area where Soul Contracts are kept and saw that she had several contracts with him as his teacher. It turns out that her Higher Self refused to abandon him as long as these contracts were in place. In this case, we were able to rip up these contracts. It was agreed that she had done enough work, had learned what she needed to through him, and could be released from these contracts. My client let him go, with love, knowing he would get what he needed in another way. She was no longer compelled to save him, and the energy chords between them were removed.

This is a simplified version of the story, but the basic elements contained illustrate both the complexity and symmetry of human relations. There is a beauty and rhythm to everything in life, including our challenges. Next time we will explore how past lives and karma affect our relationships.
