Much of Palmistry is a study in the obvious. So often we merely have to use our eyes to discover apparent truths. And if the discernment of our gaze is subtle, the truths discovered may be small and exact, yet reveal large areas of character. Even in the allopathic practice of medicine, the hands and their condition are an indicator of physical health. As some of the most active organs we have, the hands will leave a detailed record of our pursuits and life styles. Fingernails, for example, occupy a minute but essential part of the hands. They are composed of keratin as compacted cells that grow out of the skin and their growth is continuous. Composed of dead tissue, nails rest on a plate of living flesh dense with nerve endings and blood vessels. The primary function of nails is to provide protection to the fingertip and a firm backing for the grip and manipulation of small objects. Nails are a sure barometer of health. Vertical ridges, brittleness, the moons and the translucence and color of the nails are all significant indicators of physical well-being. Obvious signs of character revealed in the nails would include bitten nails, associated with anxiety or a nervous cast of mind. Manicured nails indicate a fastidious nature. Brown stains around the nails may be found on the hands of the smoker, especially the dominant hand. The nails on the dominant hand will grow more rapidly than the passive, and the nails on the thumb, grow faster than those on the little finger of Mercury. The importance of the nails as indicators of health was recognized in 400 B.C. by Hippocrates. Medical students are made aware of classical diagnostic signs called the Hippocratic or watch glass nails. These nails curve around the edge of the finger in the shape of a watch crystal and may indicate lung tumors, heart disease, tuberculosis or cirrhosis of the liver. With these conditions the nail color tends toward blue. If the nail color is red, it indicates a tendency to poor circulation. Red nails may also represent a violent temper and angry moods. An iron deficiency may be present if the nails are white and a general predisposition to self-absorption often acompanies this nail color. The optimum nail color is pink and any white specks present could indicate poor nutrition. Like the hand, the nail shapes illustrate different character. The square nail indicates a mild temperment. Broad nails may be found on those with strong force of personality. Fan-shaped nails illustrate a nervous temperment. Almond nails are found on the hands of gentle and good-natured people who may be inclined to dream, rather than act in life. The narrow nail could indicate frigidity with a predisposition to self-centeredness. Lines and ridges in the nails have their own unique character and may be directly related to our health. Vertical or longitudinal ridges may be associated with skin disorders or rheumatic predisposition. Horizontal ridges, sometimes called Beaus Lines often appear with an illness. White horizontal lines, known as Mees Lines, may appear with a high fever, poisoning or a heart attack. Dished or inverted nails indicate a nutritional deficiency or chemical imbalance. Finally, the milky white moons that appear under the surface of the nail, behind the cuticle are significant. Very large moons indicate an overactive thyroid gland. No moons show a generally weaker physical constitution. Heart disease may be present with poorly formed moons that are tinged with blue. Respiratory disorders are also possible with this indication. The characteristics of the moons are generally hereditary. They are good indicators of genetic predisposition to health or disease. Remove All Your Obstacles!
