All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
––Pascal

After a two-day period of incubation this week, my intuition told me to write about The Power of Silence. For two days straight, my ego was trying to pull me away from my vision and my passions. Have you ever found this in your life?

My energy just wasn’t the same and I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t seem to get my creativity flowing (I’m used to it being right at my side.)

I seemed to have forgotten the most valuable lesson I’ve ever learned: when the mind and the emotions are having a civil war, stand back and just watch, just listen and be silent...

I had forgotten the simple lesson of Nature, her secret is patience, and we can learn so much from Her. And yet, even though I know this lesson well, I still “caved in” and allowed my ego to steer the ship––funny how we let the False Self (Ego) take over?

Wayne Dyer writes, “We have no training in silence”

We’re brought up thinking that it’s good to “keep busy” and it’s bad to be “lazy” or idle. Do we ever step back from the friction of our lives to notice that the little child inside of us is aching for Love and Attention?

If we took just 10 minutes a day to quiet our minds and listen to our feelings, we could end any misery or confusion that we EVER feel. Why? Because when we quiet our over-active minds and listen for the silence between our thoughts, a profound shift begins to happen...

We’re able to hear the stillness within us, and realize that we’ve never been alone, we’ve never been separate. Instead, we’ve found our way back home again.

The old sage Vernon Howard once wrote:

People think that life has hundreds of problems.
It hasn’t. There is only one problem.
The lost child doesn’t know the way home.

Can you see now why we keep missing the lesson? The scared child inside feels isolated and alone. It took me over 10 years of “study” to find this universal Truth. Once I discovered it, the old fears just seemed to melt away...

Because I was able to re-connect with the silence within me, instead of waiting for life to calm down, I chose to calm down.

Howard continues: “When new students came to Pythagoras, the very first lesson they heard was ‘Learn to be silent. Let your quiet mind listen and absorb.’

“We try to reassure ourselves with our human thoughts, but mental gymnastics cannot help us and we know it. Trying to uplift ourselves with conditioned ideas is like trying to get upstairs by pacing around the basement. A new kind of mind is needed.”

What is this new mind that Howard is referring to? The simple solution to all the misery is to take 10 minutes today and:

and allow your mind to be still. As any thoughts try to overtake you, just let them go, just allow them to roll away like the waves of the ocean...No effort to make them go away, just letting them flow back to the ocean...

Knowing that this 10 minutes of time for yourself is the single greatest investment you can make in yourself.
Too busy to take time to do this? Then, NOW is the BEST time. Why? Because, if you’re stressed and overly busy, your feelings are trying to tell you to slow down. Ignoring these signals are the beginnings of what’s called “suppression”.

Suppression occurs when we feel a feeling and then don’t listen to it. The feeling doesn’t just go away. No, it remains inside of us, simmering, stirring, waiting for it’s moment to escape, like a basketball forced under water, sooner or later, it has to come up, and when it does, have you noticed how it comes up?

Slowly? Or all at once with an energy all it’s own? If you ever wonder where the anger came from when you’ve had an argument, you know what I mean.

As Susan Castle, author of the Essence Method states, “When you re-connect to the child within, you’ll discover you’ve found the peace within that you’ve always longed for”.

So today take 10 minutes and quiet your mind, take a walk in Nature, or take a break and find a quiet spot, just for you.

And remember to really
