On August 5 and November 2, 2001 and on May 26, 2002, but effective through May 2003, the planets Saturn and Pluto oppose each other from Gemini to Sagittarius. This configuration will affect world events and individuals astrological configurations that are affected by this aspect.

What Does Saturn-Pluto Opposition Mean?

An opposition represents two opponents facing off against each other. Medieval astrologers thought of the opposition as hostility. Modern astrologers think of it as an indication of difficult challenges requiring creative thinking to resolve the problems. However in Mundane Astrology (the study of how the planets affect large masses of people, government, land masses, and so forth), history points out that this configuration can often wreak havoc on governments and nations.

Pluto is a planet that a lot of astrologers look upon with dread. It has a long cycle of influence and when it is in aspects that affect our social structure or economy, it can affect the lives of billions. Pluto is transformative power. It’s the kind of power that results in regeneration and drastic change. Things die or pass away; then something new is born from its ashes—like the Phoenix. When circumstances attain stability and permanence, there is nearly always a cycle of decay and degeneration. As humans, we try to maintain the status quo, but Pluto’s relentless force won’t be stopped. The harder we push against change, the more powerful the energy of change becomes. Then becomes a seeming landslide out of control. We experience this as a feeling of imminent doom and disaster. But as cycles go, this landslide weakens and slows, and new patterns emerge.

Saturn on the other hand resists change. Saturn stands for order, structure, mechanical law, and the physical laws of the world. Saturn is also the planet of karma. It is our karmic taskmaster and makes us face the consequences of our actions.

Saturn, although not traditionally associated with change, does affect change. With Saturn, change transforms into hardening, getting smaller and more concrete. Saturn brings karmic change as we face our karmic lessons and reap what we have sown. Saturn and Pluto together create metamorphic changes. Together the two often bring about a needed crisis to shake us out of complacency or to clear karma. These changes, although often painful are forcing us into transformation because we didn’t or couldn’t see what needed to be done along the way to avert such deep cleansing. As we are going through this transformation, Saturn will restrict our freedom, our resources, and our ability to move freely about.

Some Saturn and Pluto Historical Events

October 4, 1914 to May 19, 1915. This happened just after the beginning of World War I. But, just before the war began, Mars passed by both Saturn and Pluto triggering the events that would lead to world war. WWI dissolved the old, established empires. New nations were born. This  Saturn/Pluto energy destroyed the existing order and created a new one.

February 17, 1931 to December 13, 1931.
This lent energy to the Great Depression. The world’s social structure and economy were going downhill rapidly. This cycle was one of the factors that allowed the rise of Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

March 26, 1940. World War II, like World War I brought destruction and transformation of ingrained world social structure and governments. Perhaps WWII completed the work of WWI. Now the conflict was eased in Europe and replaced by the cold war between the U.S.A. and the USSR.

August 11, 1947. A new Saturn-Pluto cycle began and with it came full swing of the Cold War and the end of a worldwide recession.

December 27, 1955 to October 7, 1956. The Cold War continued to rage, but U.S. economy prospered. Israelis invaded Egypt, and the French and the British bombed the Suez Canal. Hungarians rebelled against the Communist regime, but failed in the face of Russian tanks. All this is an expression of the struggle between the forces of change and the powers of keeping status quo.

April 23, 1965 to February 20, 1966. This Saturn/Pluto combination was made even more eventful because Uranus joined the party creating energies of revolution and upheaval. In the U.S., race riots burst out in the larger cities. The Vietnam War "escalation" brought major uproar and rebellion in the U.S.  Then came the "Six-Day War" when Israel defeated the Arab nations and took the West Bank and the Golan Heights.

May 28, 1974. This pass of Saturn/Pluto set up the Yom Kippur War between Israel and the Arabs, which led to the Arab Oil Embargo and the U.S. economic crisis, called “stagflation,” and energy shortage

November 8, 1982. This was a time of brutal wars between Iran and Iraq. Also, the USSR/ Afghanistan conflict of this time was one of the factors leading to the fall of the USSR.

The New Saturn-Pluto Face-Off
Saturn opposes Pluto from August 5, 2001 to May 26, 2002. Its effects are felt from August 2000 to June 2003.

Looking back at the patterns these planets create, we can expect (and are already seeing) economic recessions and depressions, wars, more unrest in the Middle East, especially involving oil.

1. Economic Recession. We have stock markets continuing to decline. The current energy crisis was brought on because of the deregulation of utilities, increasing prices and causing a major reform in the way the energy companies purchase and regulate energy.

2. War. If history is repeated, it will be hard to stay out of some kind of conflict during this Saturn/Pluto period, especially in the Middle East. And the long-term conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians looks like it will continue to escalate for a while. The whole Taliban mess is a definite expression of Saturn/Pluto.

How long are these Saturn/Pluto effects going to last?

The fact that Mars and Uranus are not making major appearances in the Saturn/Pluto party this time gives hope that the effects this time may not be as severe as a world war. President Bush’s chart indicates war or, at the least, blustering by Bush during his administration. The planetary configurations during this Saturn/Pluto cycle do not necessarily indicate an inevitable war. According to other astrologers, looking at the complexity of charts and astrocartographs, if there is a war, there may be some bungling involved. But on a ray of hope, this Saturn/Pluto cycle does not suggest that war is inevitable. Perhaps the prayers and meditations of everyone working toward peace will prevail.
