Of the three major lines in the hand, the Heart Line, or Line of Affection, is highest on the hand. This is in keeping with the "Three Worlds" of the hand that rise from the base of the palm to the fingers, with the physical world, the mental world and emotional or spiritual world. The Life Line is rooted in the lower third of the hand, in its physical realm and the Head Line crosses midway across the palm in its mental aspect.

The Heart Line runs across the top of the palm just under the mounts of the individual fingers. Both the depth and nature of the Heart Line as well as its length are indicative of character. The emotional character, as well as physical health, are both revealed by the Heart Line and the typical sayings one hears in daily life pertain in subtle ways to the truths indicated by this important major line. If the parallel line forms an "island" a period of stability is shown with the ability to make important distinctions between different aspects of love.

The Heart Line, deeply cut and running down the side of the "percussion" of the hand, directly under the little finger of Mercury, manifests "Agape," that universal and humanistic love of life and humanity celebrated by the ancient Greeks. If the Mount of Venus directly below the thumb, is well pronounced and flush with blood, a passionate physical nature is shown. In combination with a deeply cut Heart Line, a pronounced Venus Mount shows passionate vigor in erotic love.

Usually the Heart Line begins under the index finger of Jupiter, between Jupiter and the middle finger of Saturn, or directly under Saturn. Jupiter, with its "executive" capacity in the hand will initiate a Heart Line that is "ideal" and emotional in nature, firm with resolve and an ability to "make love work" in different ways.

Commencing with a fork between Jupiter and Saturn, the Heart Line may indicate balance in matters of love between the ideal energy of Jupiter and the sensuality of Saturn, a practical basis for a relationship. If the Heart Line originates under Saturn, a propensity for the physical side of love is shown. Look at the Mount of Venus if this is the case.

Chronologically speaking, the Heart Line beginning at Jupiter indicates an "early start" in matters of love. Often, late starters are more inclined to sensuality, as the Heart Line commences at a point closer to Saturn.

When the Heart Line cuts deeply across the upper palm and down into the side of the percussion, love and health throughout life are shown. Frequently, significant relationship or marriage lines can be found on the percussion of the hand just above where the Heart Line ends. Children, both biological and adopted, are shown as small vertical lines on the percussion running at 90 degrees to the marriage lines.
