Of the four major lines in the hand, the Life Line is the most directly connected to our physical existence and our rootedness in the material world. Curving inside the hand between the thumb and the index finger down to the base of the palm and below, the Life Line is a sure index of our physical health and vitality. A healthy Life Line should be deep, well-cut, slightly pink and marked.

The Life Line originates near or joined to the Head Line and curves around the Mount of Venus on the ball of the thumb. The character of the line is important, its course, form, color and intensity. If the Line Line starts high up near the index finger of Jupiter, a tendency to mental activity and ambition is shown. Starting lower on the hand down towards the thumb, a more physical nature is shown.

There are more misconceptions about the Life Line than any other line on the hand. But it directly reflects upon physical stamina and the passionate enthusiasm one brings to life, particularly if it curves far out into the palm before circling down to the base of the hand. If close to the thumb a quieter nature may be shown.

Indian Astro-Palmistry places great stock in defects on the Life Line with breaks and marks such as chains, hooks, islands, curves and grills indicating different forms of hardship. Chinese hand analysis, based upon the four elements, indicates that the Life Line is connected to Earth and our Chi (energy) is evident in how well marked this line is.

The major lines in the hands are sometimes called "Palmar Flexions" formed early in prenatal life and infancy with the folding of the hands. Dr. Eugene Scheimann, M.D. in A Doctor's Guide to Better Health Through Palmistry notes that palmar flexion creases are formed during the third and fourth fetal months.

The inherited constitution is shown in the Life Line on the individual's passive or left hand. Illnesses gone through and those that may occur are shown in the Life Line of the dominant or right hand. Sometimes called the Thenar Line in medical practice, the Life Line may be of use to physicians as a diagnostic tool.

In general, an individual's life is seen to begin where the Life Line originates between the index finger and thumb. As the line runs down to the base of the palm a chronology of years, an individual clock is indicated. Various vicissitudes and blessings in the form of lines, breaks, and shapes encroach upon the Life Line over the course of the individual's existence. Freedom from breaks in the Life Line are a positive sign. When the Life Line reaches down to the bracelets or "rascettes" below the base of the palm on the individual's hand 90 to 100 years of life are shown.

The Life Line marks the great divide between the thumb and the rest of the hand which it opposes, a characteristic that is rare in mammals and makes human beings the builders and shapers of the physical world.
