The belief that man is part of a greater universal force led easterners, particularly the Chinese, to patiently study the elements of nature and how it affects peoples lives and behavior. The result of these centuries of study came to be known as Feng-shui. "Feng" which means wind and "shui" which means water is an ancient science that deals with balancing the elements of the environment. If the elements of the environment are in equilibrium, people who live in it are healthier, happier and are more in harmony with one another. In ancient times, Feng-shui masters would make use of their knowledge to detect the kind of people living in a certain environment. If the environment has a bad Feng-shui, the people living in the area are usually restless, nervous, irritable and unhappy. Having been born into a family of Feng-shui masters, I was taught to take a close look at every place I visit. My father used to tell me it is vital for us to spend time observing our journey and our environment because they tell us about the place and the behavior of the people. In my travels I have learned my father was rightpeople do behave in accordance to the landform and the environment of a particular area. When I first visited Burbank, California, the fire shaped ridges of the mountains told me about the nature of the people. Fire shaped mountains make people hot tempered and active to the point of restlessness. Places like this are always buzzing with activities and opportunities. Since adults tend to occupy themselves seeking and seizing these opportunities, they seldom have time to spend with their childrenresulting in confusion among children. Many times vegetation can help to alleviate imbalances. Vegetation and greenery helps people feel cooler. Imagine the difference between walking in a place where trees abounds and on a concrete pavement where there is a total absence of greenery. A place full of concrete makes people feel there is no place to escape mentally. Too many concrete buildings reflect heat and make a place hot. This condition makes people very hot tempered, very nervous and depressed. Children, in particular grow up feeling trapped since the concrete buildings surrounding them make them feel restricted and subconsciously imprisoned. Fortunately, the Hollywood Beautification Team and Sharyn Romano have begun to take action to make Hollywood a better place by planting trees. We helped persuade companies to accept the offers for free planting of trees outside their shops. The trees will bring prosperity to the people of Highland Avenue in Hollywood in a few years time. Not a lot of people are aware, but a bad Feng-shui can be transformed into a good one. One of the places I know whose Feng-shui transformed from good to bad then back to good is an old town pier located along the River Thames. One of the oldest in the world, this pier had grown into a very prosperous trading area. There were old houses that used to shelter the town pier from the wind. One day, the local government decided to modernize the town. They knocked down some of these houses and began building new roads in the area. Not long after the modernization effort, businesses began to suffer and the pier eventually closed in the 70s due to lack of business activity. I became interested in the story and discovered that among the roads that were constructed was a 3 mile long road facing the old town pier. A long road is like an arrow Sha Chi (poison arrow) that makes the chi flow too fast, it disperses the healthy chi into a negative chi. By the time the chi reached the pier it had become harmful to humans and buildings as well. In an effort to revive the prosperity of this town, one of the local governments commissioned me to work along with the Chief planning officer and architects as they built the International Channel Tunnel Terminal. Known as the Effesfleet Terminal, the tunnel will link France and London and be completed in 2007. The local government wanted to have the Feng-shui interpreted before further damage arose. Upon looking at the place, I explained there were several reasons for the deterioration of the place. The interaction of the River Thames, the dual carriageway and the railway were built close to one another and obstructed the delivery of a positive chi and the place stagnated. Initially, I suggested building several roundabouts but I found the cost was prohibitive. So we opted to plant some trees in certain locations to help slow down the negative pull of the new constructions. The town planners were delighted at the outcome. That town was just one of the many who benefited from Feng-shui. Homeowners, business owners and individuals may also benefit no matter what their goals. If all the elements in their surrounding are balanced, it shows in their behavior and their way of life. The Messenger Website Copyright © 2005 The Messenger - All rights reserved |
