The surrealist painter Salvador Dali was one of the most mystical of modern artists. Dali used much ancient and religious symbolism in his paintings and relied on his own dreams and intuition to create images. Not surprisingly, Dali had the long and narrow shaped Intuitive hand and, of course, his hands delicately rendered the strange and varied harvests of his mind and spirit. "Painter, you must now open your painter's hand and look at your painter's fingers," Dali wrote in his book, 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship. "You will see five of them. Count them parsimoniously: one, two, three, four and fivefive and not six. Therefore never let that number five, leave your painterŐs brain henceforth, for it is essentially the number, not only of your human condition, but also of your cosmogony." On the human hand the number five is Mercury, the little finger, the fifth digit. The finger of Mercury is quickness itself and related to Air and the astrological sign of Gemini. Mercury rules over communication, speech and hand gestures. While the index finger of Jupiter rules the mind, Mercury governs the expression of the mind. If qualities of Mercury are too pronounced in the individual there may be volatile changeability that may be too quick for more stolid types. Mercurial types are persuasive in speech, make good salesmen and are good judges of human nature and character. They also excel at business and oratory. A line of Intuition may run from the base of the Mercury finger straight down to the Mount of Luna below it. The Via Hepatica or Line of Health may also run directly from the middle of the base of the palm up to the finger of Mercury. The presence of a Health Line is not an indication of poor health or sickness but is a barometer of health issues for an individual. As with all lines on the hand, their presence on the passive (usually left) hand indicates inherent characteristics, natural born issues and inclinations and the absence or presence of the same line on the dominant (usually right) hand illustrates how the particular individual is working out those issues in life. The dominant hand is always a "report card" of individual action when compared to the passive hand. In conjunction with the Mount of Venus, directly below the thumb, the little finger of Mercury also shows the sexual potential of the individual. When the finger of Mercury is thick and firm and there is a well-padded Mount of Venus, the individual has great sexual vigor. People who wear rings on the little finger may not be aware of it, but it is a sure sign of sexual dysfunction and blocked natural energy. A ring on the little finger may also indicate difficulties in communication or "speaking out." Mercury, the number five, ineluctable as Air, pervades the entire natural world, providing a vehicle for organic life. "Know at once," writes Dali, "that among the most inexplicable secrets of nature and creation is that which rules, that the number of five governs the animal and vegetable world, that is to say, the organic world, but that on the other hand never, never does this number of five occur in the mineral or inorganic world."
