Happy New Year Everyone! It's January and time to regain the lost willpower and self-control that seemed to dwindle as the holiday festivities kept tempting your resolve to be a healthy party person. Our modern lifestyle can make it easy to fall into unhealthy habits. Many times the sofa or recliner become much more tempting than the treadmill. In order to help you put everything into proper perspective here are some fun facts about the power of food. Food is our body's fuel. Just like your car needs gasoline to run, your body needs food to keep running. However, you don't see a 3000 gallon gas tank on a car that gets 25 miles per gallon. And you don't need that oversized stomach or those bulging thighs to keep your body running. It's time to trim the tank!
The next time you start to fuel (feed) your body think about some of these numbers:

Food Choice / Energy In verses Activity / Energy Out

1 piece Pumpkin Pie w/Cool Whip
480 calories o Non-Stop Singing: 65 minutes

1 cup Stuffing - 170 calories
Playing Tennis continuously: 30 minutes

1 glass (6 oz.) Wine - 150 calories
Walking, quickly, non-stop: 30 minutes

Chocolate Candy, 6 small pieces - 230 calories
Bicycling 6.25 miles at 10mph

3 Homemade Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
260 calories o Mow the lawn: 55 minutes

1 Big Mac - 540 calories
Running 8 minute pace non-stop: 55 minutes
2 cups Fat-Free Vegetable Soup - 160 calories
Light Housework: 30 minutes

4 cups Lettuce Salad w/Veggies - 150 calories
Grocery Shopping: 30 minutes
(Lemon Juice for Dressing)

1 Fresh Orange - 110 calories
Talking on Phone w/Friend: 20 minutes

Even those who are least drawn to self-control and discipline can be capable of increasing their own willpower. Considering the fact that food is simply fuel for the body there is no need to overstuff it with needless energy. The best way to trim excess weight is a combination of reduced calorie intake (energy in), and increased activity (energy out). You can try as many different diets, fads, magic pills, potions that you choose, but until you truly choose common sense and self-control you are only kidding yourself.

If you are having a hard time getting your mind to click in to alignment with your weight management goals, you should consider hypnotherapy. Many people have had success using this technique. Hypnotherapy simply brings the unconscious self-sabotaging aspects to the surface to be released and then reprograms new healthy habits, which can be easily and effectively implemented into your daily lifestyle.

Be kind to yourself as the New Year unfolds and make a commitment to new healthy habits as part of your daily lifestyle for 2002.
