Of all the signs on the hands it is the lines which are the most complex, potentially confusing, and most telling. The lines are Gods writing, living heiroglyphs of character, mutable inscriptions of the souls evolution. These poignant linear telegraphs are minute encyclopedias of character and action, transverse lines that cross over from an invisible world of heart and mind into the tangible world of matter. William Benham, the most rational student of cheirognomy and the author of The Laws of Scientific Hand-Reading, wrote "Therefore we may say with positiveness that the lines in a hand are the direct reflex of the subjects mind, and that his mind produces, controls, or alters them." When changes occur, he writes, "new lines appear, and cross, obliterate, weaken or strengthen, as the case may be, the Main lines, which are the original map of the life..." Chief among the main lines on the hand is the Life Line, running between the index finger of Jupiter and the thumb down around the mound of Venus, the ball of the thumb, to the wrist. When the Life Line is deep and unbroken it indicates a strong condition of physical vitality, a continuity of well-being throughout the difficulties of living. A weak or chained Life Line displays a weaker grasp on life, confusion or emotional distress. Breaks on the Life Line record illnesses. A long Life Line running continuously down to base of the palm and the rascettes or bracelets on the wrists indicates a long life, possibly 80 to 90 years of age. The Head Line is the second major line and it starts at approximately the same point on the hand as the Life Line and runs across the palm. Emotional independence is reflected when the Head Line is separate from the Life Line. The longer and deeper the Head Line as it runs across the palm, the greater the love of learning. A short Head Line reflects a narrow range of interests, possibly a specialist. The Head Line is both the intellect and moral reasoning, the mental character and personality. When the Head Line curves down to the base of the palm, the Mound of the Moon, an inclination towards the intuitive is shown, especially in the later years of life. When it curves up toward the little finger of Mercury, success in the arts and communication is shown. Sometimes the Head Line will end with a fork that has often been called a "Writers Fork." Forks generally indicate an increased ability, a versatility, that without discipline, could potentially lead to confusion. The Line of Affection or Heart Line is the third major line. A deep and long Line of the Heart shows the ability to give and receive love, both in a romantic and platonic sense. It illustrates our connectedness to others. When there are chains or little lines running up or down from the Heart Line, the vicissitudes of love are shown, whether self-created or happening as a natural matter of course. Love is essential to life, both a spiritual necessity and an emotional risk. The Heart Line often begins, near to the finger of Jupiter or midway between Jupiter and Saturn, with a tassel. This common sign beautifully illustrates the natural ability that we all have as newborn infants to both give and receive love unconditionally. Quite infrequently there are people who have a Head Line and Heart Line joined into a single line often called the "Simian Line." For these individuals there is a real connectedness, a unity of mind and emotion that can either be a great blessing or an exceeding challenge. They can wear their "heart on their sleeve," be incapable of accepting any form of criticism and find it very difficult to separate thought from feeling. Or, using this sign as a gift, one with a Simian Line can achieve greater balance that leads to an increased understanding of the thoughts and feelings of others. Remove All Your Obstacles!
